%JR%A Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 500 printer driver for the Z88 is shown at
%JL%page 51 of the Notes. This is a standard printer driver to give normal
%JR%printing, i.e. %H2%Courier, 10 characters per inch, 12 point and ECMA-94
%JR%%H2%Latin 1 character set%H2%. Codes 1 - 6 are basic but codes 7 and 8 are
%JL%options and are not necessary in their current form. Note that in both
%JL%the printer driver and examples shown below the codes have been
%JR%combined together as described on page 2-8 of the HP DeskJet 500
Owner's Manual.

%JL%These codes are used by HP to switch to the %H2%Secondary Font%H2% from the
%H2%Primary Font%H2% and back again. The Factory settings for both fonts are:

 PC-8 character set
 10 characters per inch
 12 point character height
 Upright style
 Medium stroke weight
 Courier typeface
 Letter quality

%JR%These settings can be altered by the use of the DIP switch settings.
%JL%Altering the switches alters both primary and secondary sets. However,
%JR%setting a code via the %H2%Printer Driver%H2% or %H2%Embedded codes%H2% only alters one
%JL%set [usually the Primary Set]. These codes start %H2%ESC(%H2%, the opening
%JR%bracket signifying a Primary Font code. The opening bracket [%H2%(%H2%] can be
%JL%reversed [%H2%)%H2%]; the code will then control the same aspect of the
%JR%Secondary Font. The printer can only print one Font at a time but can
%JL%shift between primary and secondary with %H2%SO%H2% and %H2%SI%H2% on a character by
character basis.

%JR%I have discussed these elsewhere in the Notes [pages 36 - 38]. As a
%JL%specific example the following is a complete code to use at the head of
a letter. Set the %H2%Options Page Margins to Zero%H2%.

(0N(s1p12v4101T&l5d8E&a12L)0N)s1p6v4101t+1U

Primary Font
(0N ECMA-94 character set Latin 1
    (s1p Set Proportional spacing
    (s 12v Set 12 point characters
(s 4101T Set CG Times typeface
&l5d Set 5 lines per inch
                 &l 8E Set 8 line top margin
&a12L Set 12 space left margin
Secondary Font ECMA-94 )0N
Proportional )s1p
Set 6 point characters )s 6v
Set CG Times )s 4101t
Set superscript )s +1U

%H1%

%JR%The secondary font is optional and used to give small superscript in the
same typeface as the rest of the letter.
(8U(s1p12v4101T&l5D&a24L)0N)s1p6v4101t+1U
In use the print looks like this and to go into small superscript print
give %H2%<>PX%H2% at any point. Recommended paper for the DeskJet 500 weighs
60 g/m%H3%2%H3% to 90 g/m%H3%2%H3%.
(8U(s0p12v6T&l6D&a5L
%JL%By changing the secondary font, or any part of it, a different effect
%JR%can then be called with %H2%<>PX%H2%, e.g. the following code will set the
%JL%secondary character set to French, change the secondary point size back
to 12 point, and revert to non-subscript text:

)1F)s12v0U
(8U(s1p12v4101T&l5D9&a24L)1F)s1p12v4101t0U
%JR%Normal text can then be interspersed with french accents as required,
viz: S%H3%{%H3%lection de l'unit%H3%{%H3% de measure en %H3%[%H3%C ou %H3%[%H3%F.

(8U(s0p12v6T&l6D9&a5L

%JR%The HP DJ-500 will print envelopes from its top tray. Insert an
%JL%envelope [HP only recommend #10 (american) or DL (european) sizes but
%JR%others work with care]. Do not feed the envelope forward with the
control buttons. The following codes pick the envelope up and print it:

%H2%DL envelope%H2% (s6h12v1Q&l3h15E&a14L prints along envelope

%H2%C6 envelope%H2% (s6h12v1Q&13h15E&a8L prints along envelope

%H2%C5 envelope%H2% (s10h24v1Q&l3h1o3d7E&a55L prints sideways

%H2%C4 envelope%H2% (s10h24v1Q&l3h1o3d12E&a40L prints sideways

%JR%The first part of the code sets print size and draft print quality.
%JL%Note that it is not interchangeable, one [DL & C6] works only in normal
portrait printing and the other [C4 & C5] only in landscape [sideways].

The rest of the C4 envelope code is combined from:

&l3h Set use of envelope tray
&l 1o Set landscape
&l 3d Set 3 lines per inch
&l 12E Set 12 line top margin
&a40L Set 40 space left margin

%JL%In use each code is saved as a one slot %H2%Plain Text%H2% file with a short
%JR%name, e.g. %H2%DLENV%H2%. When required it is loaded into the previously
%JL%printed letter file by altering the prompt %H2%Load at Slot No%H2% to %H2%Yes%H2%.
%JR%The slot containing the top line of the name and address is given. The
%JL%one slot file will load in at the given slot, mark %H2%<>Z%H2% the top and
%JR%bottom of the block containing the code and the address. Give the print
%JL%command %H2%<>PO%H2% and press return. Hey presto the envelope will be printed.
