System Slow-Down, Lock-up or Loss of CD-ROM Access After a CompatiCard is
Installed on a Windows 95 Computer
By default, Windows 95 will revert back to 16-bit mode for all IDE and SCSI
devices once the CompatiCard II or CompatiCard IV software has been installed in
the CONFIG.SYS. This may result in slower system performance and could also
temporarily disable 32-bit IDE devices, including most newer CD-ROM drives. This
happens because the CompatiCard's device driver, CCDRIVER.SYS (CompatiCard II)
or CC4BIOS.SYS/CC4DRV.SYS (CompatiCard IV), was not originally included in
Windows 95's "Safe List" of compatible 16-bit real mode drivers. This list is
kept within Windows 95's IOS.INI file.
You can solve that problem by adding CompatiCard to Windows 95's IOS.INI file
list. Use SYSEDIT, NOTEPAD, or any other text editor to edit the
C:\WINDOWS\IOS.INI file and add ALL of the lines specified below:
...
drvspeed.com ; central point
cpsched.exe ; central Point << these lines already exist >>
faxdir.exe ; MS Word for DOS driver
dosker.com ; Carbon Copy App.
bphddrv.sys ; MicroSolutions Backpack HD driver. No PMD.
cc4bios.sys ; MicroSolutions CompatiCard IV BIOS Driver. << add this line >>
cc4drv.sys ; MicroSolutions CompatiCard IV device Driver. << add this line >>
ccdriver.sys ; MicroSolutions CompatiCard II device Driver. << add this line >>
Save the above modifications, then Shut-Down and Restart your Windows 95 system.
The CompatiCard drives will be assigned to the first available drive designation
after the internal hard drive (such as the D: designation). Windows 95 would
then automatically assign the next available drive letter (such as E:) to any
pre-existing IDE 32-bit CD-ROM drive on that system.
Important Update Note for all CompatiCard installations under Windows 95:
Be sure to obtain and install the latest version of CompatiCard software from
the Micro Solutions BBS or WebSite for best Windows 95 compatibility. The exact
filename to specify is:
CC4BIOS6.EXE BIOS driver update for CompatiCard IV (replaces on-board BIOS)
CC203B.EXE Version 2.03 Beta for CompatiCard I and CompatiCard II
