This is the Bus Toaster and Toast 'n Jam SCSI driver for Windows
95. This README file explains how to install Windows 95 using a
Bus Toaster and how to replace the default Windows 95 Bus Toaster
driver with the latest driver.

CE Compliance recovery method for Toast 'n Jam has been certified.
For full Toast 'n Jam CE compliance you must use the CE compliant
.WAVjammer drivers for Windows 95 as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Installing Windows 95 from CD-ROM using the Bus Toaster
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Install Windows 95 using your DOS/Windows 3.x real-mode
Card and Socket Services, BTASPI.SYS, and the CD-ROM drivers.

II. Run the PC Card (PCMCIA) Control Panel Applet to replace the
real-mode Card and Socket Services with the respective 32-bit
      versions.

III. Choose Yes if you are installing Windows 95 from a CD-ROM
drive connected to the Bus Toaster.

IV. Select SCSI controllers.

V. Choose the "Have Disk..." button.

VI. Insert your New Media drivers diskette for Windows 95 into
      drive A:.

VII. Select "PCMCIA SCSI Bus Toaster (btw95)" or "PCMCIA Toast 'n
      Jam SCSI (btw95)".

VIII. Choose Yes to review the system files.

      A. For CONFIG.SYS, disable the real-mode Card and Socket
          Services, BTASPI.SYS, and CUNI_ASP.SYS.

      B. For AUTOEXEC.BAT, disable MSCDEX.EXE or CORELCDX.EXE.

      C. You do not need to modify SYSTEM.INI.

IX. Turn off your computer when prompted. When you reboot, your
Bus Toaster should be detected and configured. You can
double check by running the "System" Control Panel Applet and
looking in Device Manager under SCSI controllers.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Upgrading your system to use the latest Bus Toaster driver
-------------------------------------------------------------------

As part of your Windows 95 installation, a default Bus Toaster
driver ships on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. To upgrade your Windows 95
installation to use the latest driver, you need to replace the
exsiting driver (named SPARROW.MPD or SPARROWX.MPD). To replace
the driver, follow these steps:

I. Select My Computer -> (right mouse button) -> Properties ->
Device Manager -> SCSI Contollers -> PCMCIA SCSI Bus Toaster ->
Properties -> Driver -> Change Driver -> Have Disk.

II. Install "PCMCIA SCSI Bus Toaster (btw95)" from the Bus Toaster
    Drivers Diskette for Windows 95.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Driver Parameters
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Device Manager's Options tab for the Bus Toaster to set driver
parameters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Advantages over SPARROW(X).MPD
-------------------------------------------------------------------

This driver is designed specifically for the Bus Toaster and the
Toast 'n Jam. It will work with any version of these cards. It
also contains the following enhancements:

    - Smart termination to conserve your laptop's battery
      power.

    - Easy configuration of SCSI driver parameters in Device
      Manager via property pages.

    - Better support for hot-ejection of the card.

    - Zero Consumption APM support.

    - CE Compliant Error Recovery code.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Troubleshooting
-------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have problems with your devices being recognized, try
changing the Initial SCSI bus reset option and the SCSI Transfer
Method settings.

To avoid skipping when playing video from a CD-ROM drive, try
changing the Disconnect/Reselect and SCSI Transfer Method settings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Known Problems
-------------------------------------------------------------------

If you find an instance where the SPARROW(X).MPD driver works, but
BTW95.MPD does not, please fax a problem report or send an Internet
e-mail indicating your system make, SCSI configuration, and a
problem description. All SCSI peripheral's inquiry strings
including revision numbers will speed up the process of diagnosing
some problems.

There are some devices which REQUIRE a SCSI bus reset when the
driver is first started via card insertion. An example of this is
the Seagate ST3390N hard disk.

Some devices do not settle fast enough to reply to the inquiry
command. If you find that some of your devices are not showing
up, try disabling the Initial SCSI bus reset option.

Please let us know which devices REQUIRE this option to be enabled
or disabled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
7. SCSI Termination Detection
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Your SCSI bus configuration includes the power sources, the laptop,
the Bus Toaster, the SCSI cables, the SCSI devices, and the
terminators at the ends of the SCSI bus. Depending on all of these
variables, the Bus Toaster may detect an invalid SCSI termination
condition.

If this occurs, verify that the SCSI bus is correctly terminated.
For the purposes of this document, the "last SCSI device" is
defined to be the device which is at the farthest end of the SCSI
bus away from the Bus Toaster. Refer to the manual of the last
SCSI device to verify that it is supplying its own termination
power and its own terminators are enabled. The manual may also
indicate other options for terminating the SCSI bus.

You may need to use an external terminator with its own power
supply to correctly terminate the SCSI bus if the last SCSI device
is not capable of doing so. The Bus Toaster supplies power to its
own active terminators on the card, but it does not supply
termination power to the SCSI bus.

If you have determined that the SCSI bus is correctly terminated,
then tell the driver to ignore the termination detection error by
unchecking the box to Display error messages on the Options
property page in Device Manager. This will allow the driver to
continue to load.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
8. CE Compliance
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bus Toaster and Toast 'n Jam has been tested and shown to be
compliant with the CE test standard. We recommend that in a CE
environment you use the included Windows 95 driver as this driver
has been tested to be CE compliant.

The CE compliant recovery method must be selected in order for this
driver to be CE compliant. This driver is installed into your
system with CE Compliance as the default recovery method.

If you are in a country which does not require CE Compliance, you
may elect to use Hot-eject support. Hot-ejecting a SCSI card is
NOT recommended for Windows 95 (or any other operating system which
uses a delayed write cache). It is provided for those times when
you forget to "Stop" before you eject.

As of January 1, 1996, CE Compliance is required by the European
Community. It is not currently required in the United States.
