Check your DOS disk for a file called something like KEYBOARD.SYS. This is a
device driver that loads from your CONFIG.SYS file. It changes the keyboard scan

Paradise VGA cards work well with the SX, Kevin. Many places carry these cards -
so, look for the best price. As for the monitor, I suggest that you get a
multi-sync (not a fixed sync) type. These also are sold at many places, so price
is the real factor (NEC, Panasonic and Magnavox are good monitors and reasonably
priced).

Almost any VGA card/monitor that will work with a clone will also work with the
1000SX. You have to disable the on-board video first. If your manual or local
store can't help you do that, call Tandy Hardware Support at 817-878-6875. Have
the model number and catalog number of your computer ready. They should be able
to help you locate the disable jumper. It would help to either have a diagram of
the computer layout from the manual handy, or better yet the open computer
ready. The technician on the phone wi ll be working from a parts layout and will
refer to noteable parts while guiding you along.

     From: DRSPOON To: DHOLTZCLAW

You didn't say if you were using the "Test Drive" version of Procomm or not, but
I assume that you are. The problem you are seeing is in regard to how Procomm
handles the 8th bit in your n81. There is a fix for this in the commercial
version that involves re-mapping the keyboard that effectively "strips" the 8th
bit for the display while retaining the n81 protocol. That option is NOT
available in the test driver version. One "fix" to get rid of the garbage
characters for now is to change to e7-1 parameter. That will not usually affect
your down-loads (which need all 8 bits in the x & y modem protocols) as the
program will automatically switch to the 8 bit mode. Sometimes this "automatic
switch" doesn't work (for me) so I prefer n81 for normal operations. BTW, I am
also assuming that your have the Procomm Plus Test Drive version. If not, then
the above remarks should be ignored since that is the only version I have
experience fooling around with. Good Luck

As I recall, the HX has a special expansion slot. If DC Drives advertises
specifically for the HX, then yes, it should work -- if not -- it won't.

Using an SCSI drive on the HX seems (to me) a bit of a waste. You only have an 8
bit bus which means that you will only be able to use an ST-01 or ST-02
controller. This will not produce an speedier read/write than an MFM drive, but
-- will cost you more. Also, chaining other SCSCI device is not possible because
you need a 16 bit bus for this to be realistic.

There are expansion card drive controllers that will function with the existing
controller to add two more floppy drives ... which can be external... to your
computer. They are called "Compaticard", though I don't recall the manufacturer
at the moment. Tan dy should have made an allowance for an external floppy...
check a Computer Center and/orlook carefully at the back of the machine- is
there a port marked ext. drive or something like that? I know the RL has only
one expansion slot, so yes, you would get b etter utilization of this slot by
installing a multi I/O card. Since joystick ports and a mouse port are built in,
you would only gain another parallel port and two serial ports.... then you
would need an external modem. You could use the existing serial p ort for and
external modem and free the slot for something else... that would be a good
solution IF you need the slot. If not, don't worry about when you MIGHT need it.
You will have to replace your modem too then, but why replace it now? You could
probabl y cobble a disk drive cable long enough to reach outside the computer
then connect that to a 5.25" external drive. The length of the cable should be
no problem if kept around 3-4', but you may have a problem finding a place to
run the cable out, and you wo uldn't be able to connect a 2nd internal 3.5"
floppy, as that connector would be used. You can always use any 34-36 pin
connector on the back of the computer to make an external drive cable with... I
mean ad a 34 or 336 pin connector to the back by cutting
a hole in the case though.

     RE: 1000HX and HD's (Re: Msg 18881)

I would think the SCSI adapter would take up less room, since most of the
controller is on the drive circuit board, and that is why they use SCSI on the
HX controller. The only HD s for the HX I am familiar with are the external
units available from MegaHa us. They work extremely well, but because an
external case and power supply are used, they cost about $150 over a normal PC
setup (also the special controller). I would think the internal HD takes the
extra floppy bay, so only one internal floppy can be us ed. The HX was designed
to power 3 drives- 2 internal & 1 external, so with the new low power 3.5" HDs,
there should be enough power available.

I just got a T1000 SL at the recent "dump it" sale. I upgraded the unit with a
20m hd ,a STB AutoEGA BD, and 256k of memory to bring the unit to 640k.
Everything works okay except...the Deskmate(3.00)Music program. The Sound
program works. If I remove the EGA adaptor, then the Music works. Or, if I set
the DMVID to put the EGA in CGA mode then the Music works somewhat. With the EGA
in EGA mode the music program loads and I then get 2 error boxes saying "FATAL
ERROR- Hit key to continue". Or I get "out of memory" messages. The system works
great with other EGA enviroments like Wordstar 5.0, BattleCHess ,Silpheed, and
the Kings Quest series programs. The local RS is interested in selling more
boxes. So, the "fix" i get is, "Mmm. Sounds like you need a Tandy XXXXX system.
The SL was a good product...but it is outdated." Right! Enough babble. Has
anyone come across a fix or a workaround for the MUSIC vs EGA problem?

Really appreciate some info. Doctorbob

Hi, Mike. I just uploaded Version 3.1 of CAL2K to replace Version 2 in the
Utilities database. The new one adds a clock time display to the top of the
pop-up calendar and DOS 4.X compatibility. The highlighting of today's date now
rolls over in real time if the calendar is on-screen when midnight passes.
Still under 4K of memory used, and still runs on the Tandy 2000 as well as the
IBM-types.

     From: PHILH To: ALL

Dos 5.0 and any tandy with rom such as deskmate starting from rom. There is
a problem. On my 2500 xl/2 the rom is set up a d: when you install 5.0 it
assinged new drive #'s. In this case I had a 52 meg set up as c: and e: dos
called them c & d the re sult was 1. you cannot boot from rom (never did but if
you try it will lock up and you must disconnect drive boot from floopy reconnect
drive change setup ect. 2. d: as rom is no longer there. Talked to ms-dos
support they do not know what to do. They say call tandy the tandy ms-dos
people say not their ver. so call ms-dos. (tandy does not have out ver. yet). I
am going to try to reformat and use everything on drive as c: and see if this
works. If it does will let you know. (the only real problem wit h this is I
would have to purchase stand alone ver. of deskmate. and I am not putting one
more dollor into mirosoft or the tandy man's software.

I don't believe you will need to buy a stand-alone version of Deskmate. There
should be a DESK.COM with the rest of the Deskmate stuff you loaded on your hard
drive (assuming you loaded it to a hard drive). You should be able to execute
DESK.COM from your C drive.

Personnally, I thought the ROM drive D: was a nuisance and am glad it's gone
since I never used it anyway.

Phil,
The ROM Drive on all Tandy's is accessed as a Device Driver directly from
the Tandy versions of DOS. Any Non-Tandy DOS will not see the ROM Drive and
there's no way to change it. If you want that drive you'll have to use a Tandy
version of DOS 5 (Which of course hasn't been released yet). That's just the way
it is. Chat at ya later...Jax...

About the corrupted message. I don't know myself what it was about except I
was upset with 5.0 and mirosoft at that moment. But if you want to use your
tandy and still have your rom drives you will have to wait for the tandy
version. I found this out a fter many hours loading and unloading and who knows
beside the telephone company how many hours of support time from both mirosoft
and tandy. I guess that is what you get by jumping to fast for an upgrade. It
would not matter about the rom drives except the boys use deskmate and without
the rom I would have to buy the stand alone ver. That is no big deal except I
know sooner or later the tandy man will upgrade dos so I will just wait. And I
have a ver 5.o of dos that is useless to me. (well who knows m aybe someday I
will really get mad at the tandy man and buy IBM or something). I do like tandy
and I should have known. By the way if I ever find a use for the other 128k on
the 1400hd I will let everyone know. That machine should have been a lesson to

     From: DOUGFOGG To: ALL

A new version (3.1) of CAL2K.COM is now in the Utilities database. This pop-up
perpetual calendar (1583-9999 A.D.) now sports a clock at its top, and has been
revised to run under DOS 4.X and (probably) DOS 5.0. While the revisions to
work with the newer DOS versions won't help Tandy 2000 owners much, the clock
probably makes the new version worth getting (isn't *anything* that runs on the
Tandy 2000 worth getting?). Hot key is user-changeable at initial load or later
from the command line. Still uses less than 4K of memory and works in all screen
modes (although only text-mode screens are restored after use, so be careful).
Runs on all IBM-BIOS-compatibles.

Well I finally broke down and bought a mouse, and even got it working, except (
whoops, forgot to hit return) for one slight problproblem. I want to load the
driver when I turn on the computer, so I added the following line to my
config.sys file.

device=c:mouse\mouse/c2

where c/2 tells the driver to use Com port 2, but I keep getting a message
saying bad or missing config.sys, and the mouse does not load. But when I go to
DOS and load it, it works fine. The brand is a Champ, and yes, I never heard of
it either, but it was $29.95, resolution to 400 DPI, and Microsoft or PC
compatible, and it seems okay once loaded. I've never played with the Config.sys
file before, except for Files and Buffers, but I thought I did what I was
supposed to. Please don't tell me I had to buy a Tandy mouse!

Also, I missed the beginning of the DOS 5.0 thread, guess I could go back and
find it, but I have been using PCTools for about a year now, and it seems to me
that it does all DOS 5.0 does and more, for the same $. Of course, now I'm
considering upgrading to Version 7 for $49. Ad infinitum.

Enough, too much maybe, for now. Thoughts and suggestions, anyone?

No, the SCSI adapter is just that- a buss adapter. The controlling circuitry
itself is actually on the drive circuit board.... similar to an IDE interface.
That is why the SCSI adapter is so small, and SCSI is usually a little faster
than the ST-506 type c ontrollers.

Also, the HX is a special setup... adapters are only available from Tandy,
except for HD cards available from just a couple sources (Tandy never sold an HD
adapter). ALL HX cards are only about the same size as a half card for a normal
PC. That is why many of the HD cards are SCSI also... because of the low space
requirement on the adapter card. IDE would be a natural for the HX also.... that
new internal drive may be IDE...

     VGA, SLOT BOX, PLUS BOARDS
     From: JAYSTEIN To: ALL

I've got three questions.
Does anyone know of any published instructions for disabling the built-in
graphics of the original 1000 so that a video upgrade board (VGA) can be added?
It apparently can be done as a now extinct firm, Matthews Electronics, did offer
an EGA upgrade board for the original 1000 when the latter graphic display
format was the then "hot" display.
I've already got another computer and are soon going to be getting a
386 computer, but I'd still like to upgrade the old 1000 as well to the new
graphic's format. The original 1000s are getting old (mine was bought in '85),
but they were well made (though perhaps poorly designed in respect to hardware
compatibility). I'm not needing the 1000 to have great speed, or anything, and
I have no need to run "Windows" on it; still, it would be nice for it to display
VGA graphics too.
I know that many will say it is a waste of money to invest more in a
computer this old, but I've already got a considerable amount of money invested
in it already (mostly in 1985 computer dollars). It is already equipped with a
64 meg. hard drive, 360K floppy, internal modem, 640K of memory, a speedup kit,
101 key datadesk keyboard, etc. I've also got lying around unused a spare 720K
floppy drive, a 2 meg. EMS board, and a tape back up unit. In order to make use
of the 2nd floppy and the tape back up unit, I need to purchase a dual drive box
with a power supply, but for not all that much more I could add one of the new
slot boxes with drive bays and that would allow me to also add the EMS board
which I already have lying around idle. Since the 386 computer I' considering
couldn't use the 64 meg drive, or the EMS board, and it comes equipped with a
1.44 meg floppy, I won't need those components to put into it.) If I can add VGA
graphics I feel I can better justify the extra $150, or so, in the slot box over
the dual powered drive case. While computers have come down in price and there
are some bargains to be had, considering what I already have in parts AND the
quality construction of the Tandy unit, investing $200 to $300 in a slot box
comes out pretty good against even some of the best bargains. As already
mentioned, I'm not going to need in the old 1000 the speed or power of a 386
computer, so speed and power are not a factor in the comparison with one of the
cheap priced clones. All of this though leads me to my second question.
Has anyone bought one of the new slot boxes and if so which one and how
well does it appear to be made and how well does it work?
My third and last question involves an immediate need to add a serial
port to the above computer. I've gotten an external 2400 baud modem which I'd
like to use to replace the present 1200 baud internal modem. I have a Tandy
"Memory PLUS Expansion", Radio Shack number RSC-16 25-1011 (This should not be
confused with Tandy's "Memory PLUS Expansion Adapter" (RS # 25-1062) used to
expand the memory of the 1000EX/HX) and I'm wanting to confirm if Tandy's
RS-232C PLUS upgrade board (250-1031) for use with the EX/HX expansion card
will also work with the Memory PLUS Expansion board used in the Original 1000.
There used to be a serial port board, RS # 25-1014 for use with the PLUS
Expansion board, but I don't see it offer any more. My Radio Shack dealer was
unable to tell me if the newer serial port board will work with the old PLUS
board. (I don't have any free slots I want to add as inexpensively as possible,
a serial port. By adding it onto the PLUS Expansion board I won't be needing to
use another slot and this will free up the slot currently used by the internal
modem. (The internal modem was Tandy's so called PLUS 1200 modem, but while it
can piggyback onto the PLUS Expansion board, it still occupies too much of the
space of the adjacent slot, so unlike what Tandy claimed, it does not free up a
slot.) If I can free up the adjacent slot, I can then add the EMS board I
already have which is presently lying around unused.

Thanks, Jay./help

I am not sure how you were going to send it but if it was US mail then things
have changed have changed since I last had goods delivered in the post. There
are two other possible solutions Federal Express, Purolator and UPS. All three
will deliver to Canada and all collect the duty and tax when it crosses the
border. Federal Express is the best service and just have the charges billed to
me, they are quite reasonable and as I say they collect the duty (should not be
any) only the Federal Tax, and if you place the value as what we have agreed
upon it will reduce the cost for me in terms of the 7%GST. They also collect
the express charges here if you put the bill to do so. Just give them my name,
address, and phone number (416-231-4941) and it will be O.K. thanks, Cameron

The built in Tandy graphics are disabled when you put the card in so can't use
two color monitors. Also computer bios doesn't set a couple of bytes in memory
that some vga programs look for so they won't work unless you set these bytes.
There is a short program in PC COMP. Database under keyword Paradise that will
fix this. Also the Sept 90? Tandy PCM magazine had an article on VGA and 1000's
and included a version of this program.

Disabling the 1000 video graphics would take a hardware modification. This would
be far too involved, thus, no one had ever attempted to publish the information.

Many distributors have EGA cards for the 1000 that work very well. This, in a
way, disables the graphics. However, there are still some programs that you may
have trouble with.

Thanks for the reply about the slotboxes. With the SX I can see where if a
board didn't work that it would not present all that big of a problem, assuming
iit was not a full size board, but with the original 1000, there are only three
slots rath er than five as in the SX. I'll look into some more and perhaps give

responses from either . This is partially the fault with the system. We still
have shareware floating around from the mid 80's, and hey, people move,
especially after 5 years. I have resolved my anger from this incident though,
and am in the process of registering the rest of my shareware. Another point I
would like to add though is a lot of the time people will download something
because they have to, like pkzip to decompress other files from the SIG, but
then they start useing it for other purposes, and never register it. Well, I am
one of those people, so I'm going to register PKZIP today, well accually, the
check will probally bounce after all those others . . .

I am typing this, and my last message on Procomm, I'm not sure how they are
turning out though. I might be able to get Procomm to fit my needs, but is there
any way of getting this to line wrap? As I remember, ProComm is your prefered
telecomunactions program, right?

If you have not sent the card yet hold off until I get back to you because I
have a line on a working HD Controller card for the same price and one with a
20meg HD for 90.00. I will have to contact the chap so it may be a day or two
until I get back to you. This is our Holiday weekend and I've got a full
schedule. Thanks Cameron

Mike,

I understand that but, can you explain why I'm unable to use the motherboard as
opposed to using the board that came with the drive. I assumed that the
motherboard connector was a direct link to the drive. Or is is a setup or
compatability problem? I thought I read that all IDEs are not alike, set aside
the obvious 8 bit and 16 bit incompatibilities.

     VAX Mail Chat Group
     From: JBUCATA To: ALL

I'm starting up a VAX discussion group in E-Mail. We're basically just going to
chat about any sort of VAX/VMS-related stuff. Already we've got several people
on the list.

How we're working it is, we each have a copy of the distribution list that we
send our mail to, and all the mail goes out to everybody. (If you aren't
familiar with distribution lists, ask me about 'em--they're quite handy.) When
someone new joins up, I will either tell the rest of the group to add that
username to their files, or I'll just Mail a new copy of the entire list to
them.

This discussion group is open to everybody, beginner or pro. If you're
interested, drop me a line either on here or in Mail.

The drive will not fit because the computer's case front is not the proper
placement for the HX 720k drive eject button. It it set too high on the face. We
tried it and no go.. We then bought an add in drive from Radio Shack made
specifically for the TL/2 and it fit correctly.

You make a good point about the "older" shareware that is floating around. This
is of course impossible to register when you cannot find the author.

In Procomm use the "E" option from the Terminal Options screen to set your line
wrap. This will then send a linefeed after you type the 80th character. This is
simply an ON/OFF toggle -- set it to ON.

"Unfriendly" is one of the areas that we have *rarely* been accused of, Joel! In
fact, many, many of our members are here because they think this is more
friendly than the other services.

You don't say what service you are using (Telenet or Tymnet) to access Delphi.
If you are using Telenet, after connect type @D{press the Enter key}. When you
get TERMINAL=, type D1{press the Enter key).

Also, the phone numbers for 300-1200 and 2400 baud access are different in each
area (of the country). Are you sure that your access number is 2400 baud?

If the modem is not Hayes comptible, you must first find the correct "modem
initialization string." This sets up the modem parameters needed for the correct
connection. After this has been established, I suggest Procomm, Telix or Qmodem
communications programs.

not seeing the VGA board. What brand is it?
