Need help accessing WWW text stuff with 1000EX (640K, 5 1/4 and 3
1/2 drives), no HD. Using Doslynx and do make connection, but
can't get to individual sites. Drive runs constantly. Perhaps
modem (2400) is too slow, but can't find an external 9600 (would
a 14400 work for me, although Tandy DeskMate Telecom top speed is
9600, but I do have other com programs, including Doscim 1.36).

Also heard about a program, disk doubler, that would let me use
things like nettamer, minuet, opera, that might work better. New
machine is not in budget.

Any help would be most appreciated.]

Bryan

Log into CompuServe with a communications program set to VT100
terminal emulation. Press Ctrl-C after you see the CONNECT 2400
message, and then type in your used ID and password. At the !
prompt type GO TELNET. Choose go to a specific site, then type in
public.sunsite.unc.edu. Once connected, type lynx at the login
prompt. When asked for your terminal type, type vt100 and press
Enter. There you have it! A free, text-based WWW browser at your
disposal. Type G then type in a WWW address starting with
http://. To search to WWW sites, <G>o to
http://www.yahoo.com/text. For help, type H. You can print stuff
by pressing P. This WWW browser is generally reliable at any
speed. Have fun!

If you have an ISA slot-you can install an internal modem up to
33600 and it WILL work.

The fastest external you can use is 9600. Your com port will get
confused with a 14400 because it can't handle the data that fast.
Your screen will be scrambled at times and any downloads could
be screwed up too.

I have been finding used 14400 modems for under $25 at computer
shows.

Bryan, Your computer will not handle an external modem unless
you have the plus serial card that was sold by Radio Shack, and
you also should have the memory plus expander board for the
machine. There is a way around the problem, but you would have
to find or make a special flat wire cable about 1 inch long to
adapt the port in the computer with a standard IO card which
contains the serail and a parallel port.

Thanks for the help. I'm confused. You said fastest I could
handle is 9600 yet you mentiion 14.4's at $25. ???? Also, I have
no "slots" just the connection on the RS232 adapter I put on the
memory expansion card.

Robert, actually I do have the memory plus and RS232 board and am
running a Bocamodem 2400. Just that I can't connect to WWW by
running my own program, Doslynx. Meanwhile, I took the suggestion
of Kevin Tekel and used CS's Telnet and did get into www (the pbs
home page, for example, www.pbs.org) but with display problems.
Would like to use my own program so I have control over the
display, etc.

Hi Kevin:

You're a genius! I DID get into www. Brought up www.pbs.org, for
example. But, the display is a mess--overwrites lines which pop
up any old place, large bars (one line or more wide, and across
entire screen) appear here and there. Strangely enough, if
instead of entering VT100 I enter VT52, things clear up pretty
well and I get a scrolled display. I AM using vt100 emulation.
Then, if I access by Tandy DeskMate Telecom (where I am now)
which IS VT52 I also get a mess, but if I say it's VT100 (which
it isn't) I again get a decent scrolling display. ???

I also picked up an e-mail address "lynx-dev" which I'll try.

The fastest you can use as an external through the regular com
port is 9600 (assuming this machine has a com port)

You can use any speed internal if you have a slot to put it in.

(you can use a faster external IF you install a high speed com
port in an available slot)

This has to do with the speed of the com port. The older ones
can't handle data above 9600 baud.

Bryan, you are further along then most folks that I've met that
has the 1000EX computer. I still have one that one of my
daughters is using. I took the RS232 port out of the computer a
long time ago to send to some folks that could use it. Her
computer still has a 20 Meg Hard Drive, and she uses it mostly to
write letters with. But now I would like to offer a
consideration to you. I know that you could get a 286 machine
capable of running windows 3.1, with a hard drive and possibly a
monitor for less than $100.00, or even a 386 machine with monitor
for less than $200.00. It seems to me that now would be the time
to consider upgrading the machines that you are using; especially
since you want to use the internet. Again its just a thought.

Bryan, the plus connector that is in your computer is pin for
edge card unique connector equivalent. That is pin 1 on the plus
connector is the same as edge connector point 1. If you could
make a one inch flat wire cable using a pin type connector that
would fit into the plus connector, and an edge type connector
that is the same as is found in the xt type computer expansion
slots; you would be able to put in any internal modem that is
compatible with the xt style computer, and as fast as the modem
can go, including 28,800 baud. That is how I have a external
hard drive installed onto my daughter's 1000EX computer. I have
this cable, and the xt type controller that can handle a MFM type
hard drive, on her computer. In your case if you had the same
cable it would handle the internal modem, in the same way.

However after saying all this, It is easier to get an inexpensive
used computer to upgrade to, than to reconfigure your old 1000EX.

Thanks. Someone else suggested the used approach. I had no idea
they were going so cheaply. Everything in my area is high
priced--old stuff selling for like 10% off new price. I will look
dilligently. I have another room I could set up a used system in.
My Tandy things all look and work like new so I don't want to
mess that up. (I wondered how your daughter had a hard drive on
an EX?)

PS I write programs in Quick Basic on the EX and compile it into
machine language and they run perfectly on 486's. It's amazing
what this little box can do.

You said that prices of used equipment is running 10% less than
new?
Where are you located?

In my area you see the following:
XT's $40-80 Over $100 to idiots only
286 $75-150 Over $200 to idiots only
386 $150-350 Here the equipment can vary greatly-over $300 had
better be one hell of a machine
486 $300-800 The $800 line is pushing it, but some of them
could be worth it.
Pentiums-all over the board from $700 to the moon.

I put the "to idiots only" prices in because people who know
nothing sell them to people who know less than nothing every day
around here.

I had some lady come to me with her Apple IIc that she spent $150
on. I told her that I just gave away a complete system. People
have spent $200 on PC Jr's. I sold one for $10 with extra
monitors and boxes of software to get rid of it.

The prices I gave you are what they go for where I live-@60 miles
north west of the "infested apple." {g}
That would be New York City for those who don't know... 60 miles
is still too close.

Bryan, where do you live. Maybe I could find a way to get my
extras down to your area, and get top dollar for them. Just
kidding, but still wondering.

I think I messed up my reply to you. I'll try again. I live in
Lansing, MI. We have the state capital, Michigan State
University, Buid-Olds-Cadillac GM division so businesses have all
the business they want and need not bargain on much of anything.
I have seen used stuff go at 50% over new price!
(electronics)Like laser-disc players. I also notice the national
national Tandy "upgraders" ask top dollar, like 200 for a 12 year
old EGA monitor and 50 for a clock chip. I downloaded your post
and will take it with me later this week to see what I can find.

$200 for a used EGA?
I find them for under $20 sometimes around here.
Used CGA's go for @$10.
But then again I buy a dozen or so when I get them...
Right now I can't find one... {g}
