Are ALL Tandy 1000 XT's ... or might it be a 286 ... ????

A friend has a lovely 1000, the letters after the number I didn't
pay attention to ... and I am wanting to help them get set up to
make use of Emailing by joining up to COMPUSERVE ... It has a
hard drive with >20 Megs left after lots of other programs loaded
... and it has a 3.5 720K floppy ...

I can't seem to figure out what version of compuserve's software
to expect to work on it ... The lowest version seems to require
TWO floppies ... while the next version says BEST WORKS with a
286 or better ... Anybody have suggestions ...

              The 1000, 1000A, 1000EX, 1000HX, 1000SX, 1000SL,
1000SL2, were all 8088/86 based machines.

The 1000TX was the first of the 1000 series that
was a 286 based machine but output was only 8 bits so it took
most of the 8 bit boards. The 1000TL series were 286 machines.

I ran CompuServe on them with the DOS program that
was available at that time. You might contact CS and see if it
still is available. I used a 1000SX with 40 meg harddrive and a
2400 baud modem to connect.

Now, whether any of this is available anymore is
anybodys guess...

                                    Good
luck.................BobR

Yes, you can still get the older versions of DosCim direct from
CompuServe-have used them on a variety of machines.

BTW-you can use a 14400 or 28800 modem with that old XT or
286-but it must be an internal. I have been playing with modems
and older machines just for the hell of it, and have been
surprised how well they work.

Have had trouble with the plug and play of Windows 95 on my
1000SX-can't seem to find the CD Rom Drive to install it... {g}

Actually, those old 1000's were and still are pretty good
machines-if they have a hard drive. Without a harddrive, you
have a door stop...
