A friend of mine was given a Tandy 1000 RLX system. It appears
to be a single 1.44M 3.5in disk based system. He doesn't know
much about it and only his kids are using it at the moment. I
took a look a quick look at it last night and there is a C: drive
listed. The C: drive only has a couple of this listed including
the DeskMate program (which always comes up when they start the
system). Since it had a C: drive, the first thing I thought was
"you do have a hard disk on the system", but when I ran CHKDSK
(from the DOS 5.0 floppy) it said the drive was only about 200K+
in size? Does this sound right? I didn't have time to do much
else with their system so I couldn't open it to check for a hard
drive.

I have an older Maxtor 7245AT IDE drive. Should this work in
this system? The manual only referred to a 40Meg and 80Meg model
for hard disks but it did mention an IDE connector.

That C: is not a HD, but CMOS with Deskmate and system firmware.
The T1K can take an IDE HD, although I don't know about the
particular model you mentioned.

That's what I thought but the Tandy is the first system I've seen
that did that.

Thanks for the input. I just have to give it a try and see what
happens (I'll have some time over the holidays to see what I can
do for them).

Hope your work with the Tandy 1000 RLX worked out. I've been
busy also upgrading computers, and discovering what works with
what, so have been offline for a few days. Altthough I'm not
sure, I'd guess that your HD will wrok OK in the T1KRLX. (Sticky
key on this old keyboard - another detail to take care of!)

I haven't had a chance to try it yet. My friends family have all
had to flu over the past 1.5 weeks (passing it around the family)
and I didn't want to get exposed. Thanks for checking back.
I'll yet you know if I get it working or not.

BTW, I've found some VGA programs (mostly game programs) on CSi
that have worked on their system but there have been a couple
that seemed to work except that they wouldn't recognize the
keyboard input from the arrow keys and keypad. I know the
programs worked because I ran it on my system before taking it to
theirs. Are there any issues concerning keyboard scan codes that
are not quite compatible between the 100RLX and a "AT compatible"
system?

There could be scan code differences. One thing to try is to use
a key that is in the same position as the desired key is on a
regular keyboard. Otherwise, you'd have to look into just what
scan codes were being used and which keys you'd need to replicate
them. I did this a lot for the old T2K, but haven't used a
1000RLX.

Thanks. I hope you also have a Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year. Remember, HAL's birthday will be January 12, 1997.
