Anybody able to tell me how and or if I can hook up a 6X or 8X
external CD-Rom to an original Sensation.
It is running on an OD at 50mhx with 16 MB of ram nicely with
Windows 95, plus a new 540 IDE HDD, but the CD-Rom speed limits
many newer games and CD programs.
Any assistance appreciated.

John,

I replaced the drive with a Creative Labs 2X a couple of years
ago (probably can't even buy a 2X anymore). Anyway, just open
the case, remove the metal plates (see the instruction book),
pull up and turn over the CD-ROM/HD, remove the cables, unscrew
it, replace it, hook it up the controller card that goes in one
of the slots and off you go. Windows95 will recognize it on
startup.

I have found the limiting factor (I too have 2X overdrive chip
and 16megs memory) is the computer speed. The 2X (or more) drive
will help, but it will never do more than a '486/50.

With a three year old computer, you are on the edge of stuff
still working with it. Myst is fine, 7th Guest will work as will
the StarTrek Tech Manual and The Dig. I had quite a time getting
it to work with 11 Hour because it would not accept an AdLib card
- gave me an excuse to buy a Sound Blaster16. The 11 Hour has
jerky sound and picture on some of their movies which I think is
a problem with the speed of the CPU (it might be one of their
'enhancements' to the game too).

If you need any other info, just ask.

Bob
