                INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING VERBAL VIEW

INTRODUCTION

Verbal View is a system-resident software product that creates large
print on the video display of a personal computer. It allows many
visually impaired computer users to read the screen and makes screen
reading easier for persons with normal vision. It is designed to work
with other software and make other programs' video displays easier to
read.

Verbal View allows	the user to work with programs in regular size
print and then enlarge either sections of the screen or individual
lines for easy review. Verbal View operates either in Column Mode or
Line Mode. Column Mode enlarges blocks of text on the screen and Line
Mode wraps one line at a time around on the screen. Line Mode will
also allow the user to scan the entire screen one line at a time.
Nothing on the screen can be added, deleted or changed in large print
mode.

Verbal View enlarges only ASCII characters. Pictures and graphics
characters will not be enlarged This makes Verbal View particularly
useful for text-oriented software such a word processors, spreadsheets
and data bases.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Verbal View works on the IBM PC, XT, AT, and Convertible and most IBM
compatible computers. (Two on which it does not work are the Lanier
Concept 2000 and the Kaypro 2000.) Verbal View takes up only 40K of
memory. It requires one floppy disk drive and can be used with a hard
disk.

Verbal View can be used with either a monochrome or color monitor. It
can be used with either a monochrome board or a CGA or EGA board.
However, it may not be compatible with some older monochrome boards.

Verbal View will only work with programs which place ASCII text on the
screen. It will not enlarge bit-mapped graphics, nor will it enlarge
pictures.

Verbal View is a pop-up, system-resident application which is designed
to work with other software. It is not	copy-protected to allow the
user to make backup copies.

Verbal View is based on National Bureau of Standards print fonts to
provide extremely high quality print which is easy to read.

HOW TO USE VERBAL VIEW

To load Verbal View, type VIEW. A screen will appear with the Verbal
View logo and copyright notice. After a brief pause the system prompt
will reappear.

After loading, Verbal View can be brought up at almost any time by
holding down the ALT key and tapping the CONTROL key. The line of
large print text which appears on the screen (the top line in column
mode) is the line on which the cursor was located when ALT CONTROL was
typed.

To exit Verbal View and return to your application, press the ESCAPE
key.

The following table shows the keys used to control what portion of the
screen Verbal View	enlarges, as well as the size and color of the
characters.

ALT CONTROL Enter Verbal View.

ESCAPE Exit Verbal View and return to application.

PLUS (+) Changes the size of print displayed on the screen
in column mode. Three sizes are possible: six,
four, or three lines filling the screen. Pressing
the PLUS key will change the size to four, three,
and then return to the default of six lines. The
actual character size will be proportional to the
size of the monitor used. The larger the screen,
the larger the characters. The PLUS key also
speeds up a page scan (see F4 below).

MINUS (-) Returns to the default print size (six lines per
screen) in column mode. The MINUS key also slows
down a page scan (see F4 below).

F1 Line and Column Mode toggle switch. Line Mode
means that one line at a time is enlarged and
wrapped around on the screen. Column Mode enlarges
twenty columns at a time in the default print
size. Lines on the side and bottom of the screen
indicate what portion of the screen is being
enlarged. The number of the line being enlarged
appears in the upper left-hand corner of the
screen. Verbal View comes up in Line Mode. Use F1
to change to Column Mode, and F1 again to return
                    to Line Mode.

F2 Changes the color of characters on color monitors.
Nine colors are posible. Continue tapping F2 until
the color you want is displayed. F2 also changes
                    the contrast on monochrome monitors.

F3 Leave Verbal View and remove it from memory. This
key should only be used when Verbal View was the
last resident program loaded. You must also have
entered Verbal View at the system prompt. Typing
F3 will prompt you to confirm your choice. Type Y
to terminate Verbal View or N to return to Verbal
                    View.

F4 In Line Mode this command will scan the page
starting at line one. Each line from 1 through 25
will be displayed for a short period of time. The
scanning can be slowed down by typing the MINUS
key or speeded up by typing the PLUS key while the
                    page is being scanned.

F5 Changes background colors on color monitors.
Fifteen colors are possible. F5 also changes the
                    contrast on monochrome monitors.

F6 Press F6 to make letters thicker. Then press F6
again to make the letters thinner.

HOME The HOME key operates differently in Line and
Column modes. In Line Mode, HOME moves the video
display to Line 1 of the 25-line screen	wrapped
around on the screen. In Column Mode the top six
lines of the screen will be displayed (or fewer,
depending on the size of print selected with the
                    PLUS key).

END The END key operates differently in Line and
Column modes. In Line Mode END displays Line 25
wrapped around on the screen. In Column Mode END
displays the last six lines on the screen (or
fewer, depending on the size of print selected).

PAGE UP PAGE UP moves the video screen up six lines. If
Line Mode has been selected the sixth line above
the current line will be displayed. If the line
currently displayed is line 1 through 6 on the
normal screen, PAGE UP will display line one. In
Column Mode, PAGE UP moves the video display up
                    six lines.

PAGE DOWN PAGE DOWN behaves like PAGE UP except that the
line displayed will	be six lines down from the
                    current line.

DOWN ARROW In Line and Column Modes, DOWN ARROW displays the
next line down on the screen.

UP ARROW In Line and Column Modes, UP ARROW displays the
next line up on the screen.

LEFT/RIGHT ARROWS These keys only react in Column Mode. They move
the video display to the left or right one column
                    position.

INSERT/DELETE These keys affect only Column Mode. The INSERT
key moves the video display to the left	side of
the screen. The DELETE key moves the display to
the right side of the screen. A line on the bottom
of the screen will reflect the relative position
on the screen of the information being displayed.

TAB/BACK TAB In Column Mode the TAB key moves the video display
eight characters to the right. BACK TAB (initiated
by holding down the SHIFT key and pressing the TAB
key) moves the display eight characters to the
                    left.

ENTER Displays the line the cursor was on when you
                    entered Verbal View.
