I'm sorry to hear that your HP has taken a holiday.  

The reset switch is formed from the aluminum ground shield that lies along
the plastic back case of your HP48.  A piece of that shield is formed into 
a spring contact.  When you press on that contact through the hole, the
contact touches a large pad on the circuit board, grounding the Yorke IC
Reset pin.

IF the spring contact has broken, you could still actuate the Reset pin by 
inserting a metal widget (re-bent paper clip) through the hole to touch 
the large pad on the circuit board.  Ground the paper clip widget using a 
wire to the negative battery terminal.

Conversely, you could remove the batteries and use an Ohm Meter to test 
whether the spring contact is missing by connecting the meter between the 
negative battery terminal and the paper clip widget.
