Subject: Amiga files, New mega-em

To all you foolish people trying to convert Amiga files using file
converter progs here's a simple soloution: Connect the two machines
using a null modem cable and transfer with a comms prog. I've done
this and it works fin. The Amiga port runs up to 115200 baud, so it's
reasonably quick too.

Second; I'm impressed with the general midi performance of the new
megaem. Very good sounding music and it seems to work with almost
everything, but I'm having problems getting it to do digital sound fx
(the sound blaster part) while doing general midi in most of those
finicky games, ie privateer. Digital fx works fine when midi isn't
used, but I want both, dammit. Any ideas?

I have a rev 3.7 (standard Gus) with 768k of ram.
Gus irq 7, sb/midi irq 5. BA 220h, DMA 1.

PS Where are these beta test report forms everyone keeps metioning?

Don't know 'bout CROSS DOS or whatever, but why bother? Just fire your
modem or null modem and transfer the data.

Subject: Front Page Games W/ GUS MAX?

I took one readers suggestion of using SBOSON /A and that works for Sound
FX, but I only get intro music w/ Baseball, and no music at all with
Football Pro '95. Can anyone help me get my new Max to work with any
Front Page Sports games? Right now, I have my config like this:

SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,11,5
ULTRINIT -DJ
SBOSON /A

Any clues on what to set the [Music] portion of my resource.cfg file to
in the sports games directories?

Thanks - I think I will love this card when all this setup is finally
over :)

Howdy.

On the major GUS sites, there is a file called "usail310.zip". These are
the proper 32-bit flat mode AIL drivers required for GUS sound in
protected mode games which use AIL.

Unpack the file, and the two important files are "ultra.DIG" and
"ultra.MDI". With WarCraft (v1.5), for example, you'll have to copy over
the SB16.DIg file and the SBAWE32.MDi file. THen select SB16 for sound
effects and AWE32 for music and you're set.

Can anyone tell me the internet address/fax number for Gravis?
Since *ALL* USA companies I contacted refused to sell to europe or
ignored my faxes, I decided to try to order one directly from Gravis or
ask them if they have any local distributor.
Got no reply from Advgravis@aol.com, it might be incorrect.
Do I have to give up and BUY A SB!?!?!? :)))

 Thanks!

     AWEs? (except for the $)

When I wrote in asking about having no midi device in windows, someone
replied with:

I do get startup sounds, and I can play mod, mid, wav files or whatever.
When I look at the driver list in the control panel the Ultrasound drivers
are there, and they are also there in the Sound Mapper, but when I check the
Midi mapper the old Gamewave files are there, and I can't seem to be able to
change them to the GUS. I also tried what you mentioned about the setup in
Recording session but that did'nt work either. Thanks for the advice anyway.
Maybe someone else can help me?

Damian.

Subject: GUS OS/2 drivers...

Hey Paul Lemmons,
1st. Use Manley's drivers. They work, support DOS sessions and do
emulations in DOS boxes (kinda like MegaEm for OS/2). SB Digital and
MOD and native midi synth anre in the works for the near (?) future.
But most importantly, they work great with DOS Sessions. The file is
called ULTRA06D.ZIP.
	2nd. There is no 32bit Sound Blaster. The AWE32 is a 16bit SB16 with
a wavetable add on. The 32 stands for the 32channel polyphony.

Because 'bout 50-60% of gussers does NOT have a GUS 3.xx or a Gus Max,
get it?

And I don't see any game I have where I would use MegaEm, they all have
native support.

Anyone with a plain 1meg UltraSound got v3.03b of Mega-Em's SB DAC emulation
to work? I cannot get SB DAC emulation on this version, but I can get SB
DAC emulation on previous Mega-Em versions. What's wierd is when I run
the UltraSound setup with Mega-Em loaded, it fails the Sound Blaster
selection test and says something about SBOS vector failed.

I'm so tired of reading all these postings going "...when will we see.."
If you want a cheap card compatible with everything, buy a SB. If you want
a more expensive card with better sound (although inferior to the GUS IMHO)
buy the AWE. If you want the best card from a cost-benefite point of view,
and you don't dislike hacking sound, get the GUS.

Yes; there will always be something not working with the gus for quite some
time. Yes; that is how it's gonna be. Yes; when it works, it kicks ass. Yes;
it works to some degree to keep letting Gravis know you care, JUST DON'T
WHINE DAMMIT.

I've been with the gus in close to 3 years, and I will continue with it. For
some reason, the idea of changing to a SB just does not appeal to me; I've
grown used to this, and believe or not, I like it. Nothing is better for me
than to see a new game with wicked GUS support (Dark Forces springs to mind).

So my commented gist is: "Live with having to hack sound for the gus for some
time at least".

My uncommented gist, to tired to write more, is: "90% of every 'where is ?'
query comes from people suscribing to the digest. When a header says "New
beta-release pmode (yes, pmode) at wuarchive", just dl it from wuarchive
and check it out. Don't fill the digest with mindless questions about where
it is and how it works, the info files says so. Post if you have trouble with
it. Ok, finale.
