Subject: 256K-16bit DRAM for GUS

__________________________________________________________________________
Greetings:

Can anyone please give me an idea where to get the 256K, 16-bit (40pin)
surface mount DRAM for a 512K GUS upgrade to 1Mb in Canada or US. I
believe this is the same DRAM used in the GUSMax memory upgrade. The
required part numbers according to manual are:

	OKI MSM514260A

	NEC 424S4260LE-70
		424260LE-70

	TI TM545160DZ

About how much is this chip cost and where can I get a better deal? This
upgrade is intended for the UltraSound ACE (an excellent card! by the way).
Awhile back someone mentioned that JDR carries this chip but I can't find
it in their latest catalog, please help. Thanks in advance.

Can anyone tell me what the exact differences are between the Max and
the Ace. Is it only the CD-Rom connection or are there other hardware
things that are different. I ask this because i have a IDE cd-rom
which i can't connect to my MAX. A friend of mine who has got a reg.
GUS with DB and a Panasonic CD-rom would like to save some space in
his computer so if the MAX and ACE are the same I would get a GUS ACE
and he can buy my MAX.

I'm sorry but you are mistaken. I just installed the 3.59 disks right off
the CD-ROM and there is no USS*.*. I had to go all the way back to the
92 disk sets to even find USS8.

I also have the 3.59a disks that came with the MAX at they are not there.

Of course it's a MAX. (the box is a dead giveaway! :-)

Well, as I still don't have USS16 I can't do anything of the kind.

Now for the 4th time CAN ANYONE tell me where I can get it, instead of
explaining it away... I've downloaded the entire directory at
archive.orst.edu :/pub/packages/gravis/gravis/disk/*. At it is not in
any of those disks.

Every disk set I get, I goto the restore section and ask it to restore
US*.*. I usually get the response "file not found", or whatever.

Please help.

No.. AFAIK FT2 uses MIDI only for input. output would require matching mod
commands to midi controls and is a fair bit of work.

I havent been able to test it, but FastTracker 2 supports MIDI in, which
according to the authors only work with the GUS. Myself, i would highly
recommend using FT2 instead of MIDI, because while you lose the
flexibility and compatibility MIDI offers, you gain a number of other
features (I long ago gave up waiting for Gravis to implement REAL bank
switching, ie. control change 0), not the least of which is the ability
to use the limit of your computer's RAM instead of the GUS' 1mb limit.
and considering it supports full 32ch/16b/44.1khz operation, with
multi-sampled instruments, it's fairly powerful in itself (even better
than ultra-tracker, and i was impressed with that). stick a low-pass
filter on the output and the results can be acceptable at even a
professional level.

Well there is one, it's called the Glist. I don't know how good it used to
be but it hasn't been updated very much at all since I've had a GUS (5
months). Only a handful of games have been added to that list since that
time. It is a decent reference for some of the older games though...but it
seems that nothing that's come out in the past 6 months is on there.

Oh God, please don't tell me you're trying to run the games in a window. Cos
if you haven't figured out by now - GAMES DON'T RUN WITH THE GUS IN A
WINDOWS DOS SHELL! Thatis aimed at everyone out there who doesn't already know.

Dual-boot to dos and it should be ok. Sheesh....

Well, I'm not. I have my GUS MAX on port 220, DMA 5, IRQ 11, and it works
perfectly well. (well, I haven't found any volume knobs that work on any
program yet.. but... I blame that on the programs.)
But xgmod works great, for instance.
I also have a CD ROM drive, but it is the Plextor 4Plex SCSI, so
naturally I will have no conflicts.
I am not sure if this is any great help... But it is something.

Subject: Improving MIDI playback

Is Gravis going to work on improving General MIDI playback? If anyone
heard a Roland Sound Canvas, the GUS simply does not compare. The GUS has
the "ability" for custom patches, but every game that supports the GUS so far
has used the default patches that Gravis suppled; no one has made their
custom patches.
So if this trend continues (and more than likely it will), Gravis
should re-do some (actually... most) their patches, or at least change the
volume mapping of the patches to match those of the Sound Canvas. (since
it is *the* standard for GMIDI)
Gravis could even implement some MIDI effects as well, like
chorus, reverb, echo, etc via software.

Does anyone see my point? The GUS's General MIDI playback is very poor,
even when compared to even a SB AWE(ful) 32!

Subject: InterWave

Fellow Gus'ers,

Look what I've found at the AMD WWW-pages:

AMD InterWave(TM) Chip Brings Interactive Sound to PC Audio

APRIL 24, 1995--AUSTIN, TEXAS--Advanced Micro Devices today announced the
Am78C201 InterWave(TM) audio processor, a complete personal computer audio
system on a single chip. The most advanced silicon solution available for
bringing interactive wavetable sound to personal computing, the InterWave
processor supports today's major PC-audio standards and provides the ideal
engine for running the Microsoft Windows(TM) 95 Game SDK audio feature set.

"We are pleased that AMD is developing audio solutions for Windows 95," said
Brad Silverberg, senior vice-president of the Personal Systems Division at
Microsoft. "The availability of the Game SDK and complementary audio solutions,
such as the InterWave device, will accelerate the number of compelling,
high-quality games on this platform."

The InterWave chip uses downloadable, 16-bit, 32-voice wavetable synthesis to
deliver unparalleled clarity, authenticity, and interactivity to a broad range
of business, education, and entertainment applications. Multimedia game
developers, for example, have discovered that the InterWave chip's interactive
sound capability enables PC-audio compositions to "come alive" with dynamic
realism. With interactive sound, audio output changes are coordinated with the
visual effects on the PC monitor. For example, the roar of a jet engine changes
pitch and seemingly follows a computer-generated aircraft as it veers across
the screen.

"Game developers have eagerly awaited the audio capabilities provided by the
AMD InterWave processor," said Zachary Simpson, director of technology at
Origin Systems, Inc. "The InterWave chip and the Microsoft DirectSound API will
allow Origin to deliver games supported by unprecedented levels of audio
quality and realism at consumer price points."

"AMD has taken a role of responsibility and leadership by providing the audio
features we composers need to know will be there on your PC," added The Fat
Man, the Austin, Texas-based game composer who has produced the soundtracks for
7th Guest, Wing Commander I and II, and over 90 other multimedia titles. "The
InterWave chip has a wonderful set of General MIDI instruments, carefully
crafted and balanced against each other so that all the notes will make it from
our hearts to your ears."

The InterWave chip features a powerful "Mix, Move and Modify(TM)" capability
that lets developers create new sounds, combine multiple audio sources, and
modify sounds in real-time. On-chip audio effects processing gives developers
control of such special effects as vibrato, tremolo, chorus, echo, flanging
(phase shifting), and reverb.

"With its superior sound quality and versatility, wavetable synthesis has
replaced FM synthesis in the professional music industry," said Bob Krueger,
vice president of AMD's I/O and Network Products Division. "Emerging multimedia
and Windows 95-based applications make FM synthesis no longer acceptable for
PCs, and call for cost-effective interactive wavetable solutions like our
InterWave chip."

The InterWave processor supports today's major audio standards, including the
Windows and Windows 95 operating system APIs, Windows Sound System, General
MIDI, MPU-401, Miles Audio Interface Library (AIL), HMI Sound Operating System
(SOS), legacy AdLib and Sound Blaster-compatible applications, MPC-2 and Gravis
UltraSound (GUS).

The InterWave processor provides all the high-performance audio functions
required by PC manufacturers, add-in board manufacturers, and software
developers. The 160-pin Am78C201 fully complies with the Plug and Play
specification and is ideally suited for Plug and Play-compatible add-in cards
or jumperless motherboards.

To simplify development with the InterWave chip, AMD provides OEMs and
application developers with a complete range of software drivers, reference
hardware designs, developer kits, and documentation. The Am78C201 is currently
being sampled in limited quantities to customers and developers. The 1K price
is $39.95, and volume production is scheduled for Q3 this year.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., is the fourth-largest U.S. merchant-supplier of
integrated circuits. Focusing on the personal and networked computing and
communications markets, AMD produces microprocessors and related peripherals,
memories, programmable logic devices, and circuits for telecommunications and
networking applications. AMD has sales offices worldwide and manufacturing
facilities in Sunnyvale, Calif.; Austin, Texas; Bangkok, Thailand; Penang,
Malaysia; Singapore; Basingstoke, England; and Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan.

Hi,

I'm looking allready for a long time now for a good tracker (dos or windows)
that allows you to sample something, or dump CD data in a WAV (to bypass
sampling) and then immeadiatly use that sample as an instrument, and
sequence the song using a MIDI-keyboard-controller.

FastTracker 2 is something like that, but the MIDI support isn't really good
 .

I wonder if there exist a decent tracker with good sampling features & prof.

MIDI support....

Subject: Panasonic CD-ROM with GUS MAX

Hi all,

I've recently changed from a SB Pro to GUS MAX in my MS-DOS
machine. However, the device driver (loaded in config.sys)
won't recognise the Panasonic 562 CD-ROM drive connected
to the MAX.

The Panasonic Enable jumper is on, the CD-ROM disable is off,
all CD-ROM IRQ and DMA jumpers are off (for the Panasonic),
the CD-ROM I/O port is 340h and the baseport address is 240h.

If anyone has a suggestion, please e-mail me. Hopefully, it's
only a case of a new device driver. My current one is called
cdmke44.sys (MKE = Panasonic). It worked perfectly with the
SB Pro.

As an aside, I have been running the CD-ROM drive from the
SB Pro with Digital Audio into the MAX. This setup works
fine, except that nowadays, the mouse "dies" soon after startup.
Interrupt problems? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Further, after running the SB Pro's Amp'd Out into the MAX's
Line In, the MAX's mixer needed some changing. I've found that
the following mix seems to balance out the GF1 output with the
Line In sound:

ultramix -l12 -g-5

i.e. 12 dB gain for Line In and 5 dB attenuation for the GF1 synth.
Otherwise, the synth will easily drown out the Line In sound.
I have noticed, however, that some instruments in MIDI files will
play with volumes in the wrong proportion.

Again, if anyone can help me run a Panasonic CD-ROM from the MAX,
please e-mail.

Thanks,
Keong.

Fast Tracker 2 can communicate with a MIDI device, but it can't save or
load as a MIDI file. I think it would be simple to write a program
that will convert from the .XM or .MOD format to .MID, if I had any
idea what the format was to any of these files. If anyone knows,
please E-Mail me and I will be grateful. I would also like to convert
MIDI data to .MOD format so I can write my music in a sequencer (which
I am more familiar with) and then use the cool stuff that are in a .MOD
file. (Like easier effects and the easier to sample instruments.)

There will not be any changes to the sound system on Bioforge to allow the
game to support the GUS. Sorry.
