Introduction to Codefile v.1.2
In today's world more and more data is stored in personal
computers. Security of confidential files is of a major concern.
Without protection anyone can turn on your computer and read
anything he desires, or run an executable file that you wouldn't
like to be accessed by anyone but yourself. The Codefile is a
program that scrambles files into coded form so that no one can
use them - unless they have the correct key. The files can be
read, but not understood; and the executable files, although
physically still in their place, cannot be run. Codefile provides
a high level of file security through a password that combines
with the source file using data encode algorithm. It knows itself
when to encode and when to decode the file. The Codefile also
comes with several file utility programs.

BEFORE YOUR START please review all information contained in
this Help or in file Readme.doc. These files contain important
information about the program itself, about system requirements,
about Shareware concept and information on conditions of using
this program and registering it. For details see
Hardware requirements, What is Shareware, and topic
How to register.
GETTING STARTED. Type "COFI" and press Enter.
.TOPIC:
Opening screen
The opening screen contains the bar menu, command buttons and
automatically displayes the list of all files in current
directory. The upper bar menu allows you to choose from several
useful file utility programs. To encode a file, highlight the
file in the list box and click your mouse over the CODE command
button. Each encoded file will get its file special name extension.
The program remembers the file has been encoded and also
remembers its original file name. To decode the file use the
identical way, highlight the encoded file and then click the
mouse on CODE command button. Just remember that coding a large
file may take time (depending on your computer processor speed).
.TOPIC:
Password
The password provides set of characters for the program to
combine mathematically with the data in the source file. Only
that password can be used to decode data that was encoded with
it.
Any combination of characters (letters, numbers, symbols)
that can be entered from the keyboard may be used to make a
password. But please remember, the password is case sensitive,
in other words, if your password is, say 'Evergreen' it is not
the same as 'evergreen'.
You must remember your password. If you forget it, there is
no way to decode your encoded file. There are a few points to
consider that will maximize the security provided by Codefile:
   - Use a long password. The longer the password the harder it
is to break the code. Of course, don't go overboard with
     something like '$#@&(JHN+++)*Uyhfsr4ERhdy65%42122!!!!o9tn',
or you will never remember it yourself.
   - Do not use a password that could be easily guessed, such as
     your name, your birthday, e.t.c.
*** IMPORTANT: PRECONFIGURED PASSWORD IS: Welcome ***
The first thing you probably want to do after installing
Codefile is to change this default. And don't forget, the
password is case-sensitive.

Precautions
There are some basic points we recommend to keep in mind:
   - There is no way that even we can help you retrieve an
     encoded file should you forget the password;
   - The program encode an existing file, it doesn't create
any copy or a temporary file. It always is a good idea
     to make backups of your data file;
   - Never try to modify, alter or manipulate any of the program
files. The program always checks for integrity and
authenticity of the files to protect against hacking; if the
authenticity verification fails, the program will lock
     itself and will become unusable.
.TOPIC:
Hardware requirements
IBM compatible 286 or better
EGA/VGA monitor
512kB RAM
DOS 5.0 or better
These are requirements needed for an efficient running of
Codefile. That does not mean that the program will not
satisfactorily run under lower configuration.

What is Shareware
Shareware is an exciting marketing method which allows you to
try top-quality software before you pay the author. With share-
ware, you cannot be disappointed spending money for a program
that's not right for you.
The small fee you pay to a Shareware distributor does not cover
the cost of the program itself. If you continue to use the
program, you must send the author an additional payment which
may entitle you to technical support, and other benefits. This
is termed Registration (see How to register).
Each evaluation copy is supplied to you "on approval" for the
period of 21 days. After that time you are obliged either to
register the program or stop using it.
Copying or using the program without paying for it, except as
provided above, is a breach of copyright.
Each evaluation copy is fully working, it is not limited in any
way and no features of the registered version have been omitted.
The only difference between evaluation and the registered
version are the closing and opening screens that will be removed
in registered version.
