                            HERC AUCTION DATABASE.

This program is DOS based but will work from Windows.

This DB was produced with help of members of the committee of the
Hastings Electronics & Radio Club (HERC), and is used to run periodic
sales of surplus electronic, at a small commission for the club. T
has two main limitations; the maximum sale it can handle is 9999, and
the maximum lots is 500. The reasons being I cannot bother to reset the
format to cover higher amounts, and to be honest, anyone handling
larger sales than this at a commission, should be able to afford to
purchase a more comprehensive professional package. The program has been
designed for sterling, but will work with any decimal currency, except
the sterling references need to be ignored. To familiarise yourself
with the package, I suggest you load in 100LOTS.DAT or first create a
file of random data using LOTS.EXE

The HERC auctions procedure is that anyone participating, is allocated
a number to cover both selling and buying. He or she is given a card
showing this number, on entering the premises, after providing details
of their name phone number etc. Before the auction can start, all the
lots for sale must be booked in. Option 1 - Edit entries, has a
facility under sellers, to allow this to be done without the need to
enter buyers/sale prices, at this stage. When the bidding starts, the
Auctioneer asks the final bidder to display his or her card, so that
the price and buyer can be entered. At this stage it has been found
advisable for the Auctioneer or someone to keep a manual record of the
prices and buyers. Option 2 allows a double line starting list of
Sellers to be printed for this purpose.

It is possible to set your own choice of display colours, and any
commission to be charged. Also if the price offered for any lot is
considered too low to be cost effective to auction, a minimum limit can
be set to ensure such small offers are always allocated to seller 0,
which will be the Club or Organisers.

Some error checking operates, such as you cannot List or Save data not
created, or sell lots that have not been allocated Sellers. All
entries/corrections are made using option 1, the first time of use a
filename will be requested. The initial procedure will be to either
Retrieve previous data, or allocate Sellers to Lots, then when the
auction starts, enter the Price and Buyer number. As every 10th buyer
is logged, all current data will be automatically saved and the Total
Sales displayed. To enter a stream of Sellers or Buyers press S or B.
If you use the option 11 to set a minimum value of more than say 1 for
sales, then sales over 0 and below 1 will automatically be
allocated to seller 0. If necessary you can interrupt sales to Check
the position of a Seller/Buyer and produce a printout. Option 11 also
allows you to alter various parameters and a temporary return to DOS.
